Boating is focusing on hydrogen

An innovative engine arrives

We recently talked about the importance of sustainability and how we are adapting to this. The world's first sustainable outboard motor will arrive soon. It is branded by Yamaha Motor Corporation, which presented it at the recent Miami Boat Show together with a prototype package-integrated fuel system, which the company plans to further refine.

The outboard was developed by Yamaha with Roush and Regulator Marine, who built a vessel suitable for testing this prototype (a hull based on the 26XO model and modified it to accommodate the hydrogen tanks needed to power the new outboard), whose tests will begin – the company announced – this summer.

“Yamaha is exploring all possibilities to achieve carbon neutrality, with the goal of making our production processes and operations carbon neutral by 2035, and then having a line-up of products with zero environmental impact by 2050 In the marine market, the carbon neutrality of our products can only be achieved through a multi-solution approach and we believe that hydrogen is fundamental to achieving this goal,” explained Ben Speciale, president of the Yamaha US Marine Business Unit. And Joan Maxwell, president of Regulator Marine, responded: “If we don't look for a new source, we won't find it. Innovation starts by asking questions. It creates a bit of a stir, but ultimately interesting things come from innovation. In the future, when we design boats, if this prototype turns out to be what we think it will be, we could create hulls designed to accommodate these hydrogen tanks."
