NEWS,

Used boat?

Buying guide in 7 steps

1) What boat do I want?

The first step towards purchasing a boat is evaluating the use you will make of it. One thing to keep in mind is the design generation that brings innovations that make the boat more comfortable, more livable, easier to steer with a small crew every about 5 years. Technological development and innovation is constant. You are looking for a comfortable cruise boat for family holidays. Maybe it's better to choose a more recent model...

2) How much money?

Once you have established the type of boat (pure cruiser, fast cruiser, sports boat, catamaran, historic...) you will have to take into account your savings. It is very important to keep in mind that your budget should not only be calculated for the expense of purchasing the boat. You will have to consider the costs of ordinary maintenance (mooring, insurance, hauling, launching, hull, antifouling) and also those for the various refitting works on a used boat. And then appraisal, brokers, agency rights, unexpected events. The good rule is to consider at least 15% more than the cost of the boat…

3) Where to look for it

Unless the boat of life welcomes you on a dock with a "for sale" sign, today the boat is searched for on the internet, on sector sites rather than on dedicated groups.

4) The importance of the broker

Relying only on the internet is not a good idea. An experienced broker, who operates within a large marina, may be aware of boats that are not yet on the market because the owner has not yet decided to sell, but may accept an offer; it will however be able to help you especially at the beginning, to orient you in a jungle of offers; will be able to accompany you to visit boats for sale.

5) VAT to consider!

The price is almost always indicated on the advert. Check whether the price includes VAT or excludes VAT. If the price is VAT excluded, it means that the seller is an entrepreneur and therefore the boat still has an active lease (and therefore the formal owner is the leasing company and you will have to add the residual leasing capital to the asking price), or the seller it is a charter company.

6) Charter boat, yes or no?

Large charter companies tend to offer their customers relatively new and well-equipped boats, on which they carry out constant maintenance. The boats sold therefore have many hours of navigation but only 5 or 6 seasons behind them: for the same price, they are newer than boats sold by private individuals and the systems are certainly all functioning and well checked.

7) The owner's identikit

During a visit you will never be able to understand what goes wrong on board, but you will be able to get an idea of the owner. For this reason, the general level of care and cleanliness is important because the owner who loves his boat usually takes care of the interior.
